Off-grid solar in Mount Jagged: powering two Airbnbs

We built a complete off-grid system that runs two Airbnb properties at Mount Jagged with no mains power at all. It pairs 22.8 kW of ground-mounted solar with 52 kWh of battery storage and an 8 kVA auto-start generator, and it went in over five days.

The short answer

NG Elec designed and installed an off-grid system for two Airbnbs at Mount Jagged, South Australia: 48 x 475W Jinko panels (22.8 kW) on a ground mount with driven piles, 52 kWh of battery storage, a Sigenergy gateway and an 8 kVA auto-start generator for long cloudy spells. Cabling runs underground and the install took five days.

The job

Brief, build, result.

The brief

The owners run two Airbnbs at Mount Jagged with no mains power to fall back on. Guests expect lights, hot showers and charged phones day and night, whatever the weather.

That meant the system had to cover daytime and overnight use, ride through cloudy stretches, and still keep the properties running if the battery ever shut down.

What we did

We put 48 Jinko 475W panels (22.8 kW) on a ground mount with driven piles, and ran the cabling underground. The battery and electrical gear sit sheltered beneath the array.

A 52 kWh battery stores the daytime solar for the evening and overnight. A Sigenergy gateway manages the system, and an 8 kVA auto-start generator kicks in on its own during extended cloudy periods.

We also built in a separate bypass so the generator can supply both properties directly if the battery shuts down. The generator was part of the design from day one, not an add-on.

The result: Both Airbnbs now run fully off-grid on solar, with battery storage overnight and generator backup for long cloudy spells. The whole system was delivered in five days. FAQ

Questions people ask us.

How long does an off-grid install take?

It depends on the site and system size. This Mount Jagged job, with a ground mount, underground cabling and a generator, took five days. Smaller systems can be quicker; our Kangaroo Island off-grid job went in over one day.

Do you need a generator with off-grid solar?

For most properties we recommend one. Long cloudy periods in winter can drain any battery, so an auto-start generator tops it up without anyone having to flick a switch.

Can off-grid solar run a short-stay rental?

Yes, if it's sized properly for how guests use power. We work out the daily and overnight load first, then size the panels, battery and backup to suit.

Do you install off-grid systems in regional SA?

Yes. We service all of South Australia, including the Fleurieu, Kangaroo Island, the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas, the Flinders Ranges and the South East. We're also a Selectronic accredited integrator.
