Thermal drone solar inspections in South Australia.

A thermal drone inspection finds cracked cells, hot spots and dead strings in your solar panels without anyone setting foot on your roof. NG Elec's full thermal inspection is normally $750, and in hail season we do a home hail check for $149.

The short answer

A thermal drone inspection flies a heat camera over your solar panels while they're working. Damaged or faulty cells run hotter and show up straight away. NG Elec uses a DJI Matrice 4T flown by a CASA-licensed pilot, pairs it with a zoom check of every panel and gives you a written report. Full inspections are normally $750; the hail-season home check is $149.

When to book a thermal inspection

After hail or a big storm

Micro-cracks don't show from the ground, and the damage often doesn't show in output for months.

Output has dropped

Your app shows less than usual for the weather and you can't see why.

Before an insurance claim

Thermal and zoom images give your insurer clear evidence of what's damaged. See solar insurance repairs.

A large array nobody's checked

On a commercial roof in Gawler, built-up dirt overheated the cells until they burnt, and the whole system needed replacing. Regular cleaning and checks would have caught it.

What we do

What the camera finds

A healthy panel runs at an even temperature. Damage, faults and bad connections run hotter, and the thermal camera picks that up straight away.

Cracked and hail-damaged cells

Micro-cracks you can't see with your eyes show up as hot spots once the panel's working.

Hot spots

Overheating cells lose output and can damage the panel over time if they're left.

Failed diodes and dropped strings

A dead bypass diode shows as a hot section of a panel. A whole row at a different temperature isn't producing.

Loose or burnt connections

Hot connectors and junction boxes are a fire risk worth catching early.

Dirt and bird mess

Built-up grime makes cells overheat and, left long enough, burns them. Regular cleaning prevents it.

Cracked glass and frame damage

The drone's zoom camera checks every panel up close for visible damage too.

How it works

How an inspection works

  1. Book a sunny day

Call 0425 322 552 or send the form. Faults only show as heat when panels are producing, so we book clear days around the middle of the day.

  2. Fly the array

Our CASA-licensed pilot flies a thermal and zoom inspection. For a typical home the flight itself is short.

  3. Written report

A panel map, flagged panels with thermal and zoom images, temperature readings and our recommendation: clean, repair or replace, and how urgent.

  4. Fix it if needed

If we find damage, we explain it and quote the repair or replacement. We already do insurance work, so we can take it from there.

Pricing

What it costs

A full thermal solar inspection is normally $750. For hail season we've dropped it to $149 for homes, so you can find out for sure after a storm.

  • Home hail check, hail season: $149
  • Full thermal inspection: normally $750
  • Commercial rooftops and large arrays: quoted on system size and reporting needs
  • Farms, regional homes and off-grid sites: quoted on location
  • Any repairs we find: quoted separately

Case study · Gawler, SAThermal drone inspection of a commercial solar roof in Gawler

In October 2026 our thermal drone inspection of a commercial roof in Gawler found built-up dirt had overheated cells across the array, leaving panels burnt and damaged. The whole system needed replacing, damage that regular cleaning and checks would have caught early.

FAQ

Questions people ask us.

How much does a thermal drone solar inspection cost?

Our full thermal inspections are normally $750. In hail season, a home hail check is $149. Commercial and regional inspections are quoted on system size and location.

Do I need to be home?

Not usually. We need clear access to fly near your property and a sunny day so the panels are working. We'll confirm the time with you before we come.

Why does it need to be sunny?

Faults only show as heat when the panels are producing power. We book inspections for clear days, around the middle of the day.

Will my insurer accept the report?

The report includes thermal and zoom images of each fault, the inspection conditions and a licensed electrician's recommendation. That's the kind of evidence insurers ask for, but the decision on your claim is always theirs.

Is the drone pilot licensed?

Yes. Our pilot is CASA-licensed and flies to CASA rules on every job.

What did you find in Gawler?

Hot spots across a commercial roof. Built-up dirt had overheated the cells until they burnt, and the whole system needed replacing. Regular cleaning and checks would have caught it before it got that far.

Can thermal imaging miss anything?

Thermal shows faults that affect how a panel heats up. Some very fine cracks don't show until they start affecting output, which is why we pair it with a close-up zoom check of every panel.

What happens if you find damage?

We explain what we found and quote the repair or replacement. If it's storm or hail damage, the report and quote can go straight to your insurer. Our hail damage guide covers the claim side.
