A battery only keeps your power on in a blackout if it's set up for backup, and NG Elec can wire it for a few essential circuits or the whole home. We work out what you need running, check your switchboard and show the battery rebate on a free itemised quote.

Blackout backup lets a home battery keep power running when the grid goes down. Essential-circuit backup covers circuits like the fridge, lights and internet, while whole-home backup covers the whole switchboard. A gateway disconnects the house from the grid so the battery can run it safely. On typical NG Elec jobs in 2026, a backup battery added to existing solar starts from about $9,000, after rebates, incl GST.
Is this you?
Wild weather can take out power lines across SA. With backup, the fridge, lights and internet keep going until the grid comes back.
Homes in the Adelaide Hills and bushfire-prone areas often sit on long runs of overhead lines that storms, wind and fire can bring down. Backup keeps the essentials running, but have a separate plan for anything you'd rely on to defend the property.
Keeping the internet, computer and lights on through an outage means you can keep working.
If you rely on powered equipment, backup can buy time. Talk to us about what needs to run and for how long, and keep your own medical plan in place too.
It's simpler and cheaper to set up backup at install than to add it later. Even essential-circuit backup makes a big difference.
What we do
We design the backup around what you actually want running, then wire, test and show you how it works.
Essential-circuit backup puts a few circuits, like the fridge, lights and internet, on a protected board. Whole-home backup covers the lot, where the battery and switchboard allow. In Marden we backed up 3 circuits; in Seacombe Heights we set up whole-home backup.
When the grid drops out, the gateway or backup switch disconnects your home from the network so the battery can run the house safely and doesn't feed power back into the lines. When the grid returns, it reconnects.
Lights, fridges, internet, TVs and small appliances are easy. Ducted air con, ovens, big heaters and pool pumps can drain a battery fast or be too much for it at once. We'll go through your list and set realistic expectations.
With the right setup, your solar can keep topping the battery up during the day while the grid's down. We confirm how your system behaves before you buy.
Backup often needs switchboard work. We check your board at the quote stage so it's priced in, not a surprise on the day.
We can set a reserve so the battery always keeps some charge for a blackout, even on days it's working hard. Our battery sizing guide explains how size affects backup time.

How it works
Call 0425 322 552 or fill in the form with a recent bill, what solar you've got and what you'd want running in a blackout.
We check your switchboard, pick essential-circuit or whole-home backup, and send a free itemised quote with the rebate applied.
Licensed electricians fit the battery, gateway or backup switch, and any switchboard work. We handle the SA Power Networks paperwork.
We test that the system switches over to backup, then show you what's backed up and how to check the battery.
Pricing
On typical NG Elec jobs in 2026, after rebates, incl GST: a 24 kWh GoodWe battery with backup on 3 circuits in Marden was about $10,300, a 32 kWh three phase GoodWe battery with whole-home backup in Seacombe Heights was about $11,300, and a 26 kWh three phase Sigenergy battery, AC coupled with whole-home backup, in Noarlunga Downs was about $14,600. FAQ
Standard solar without a battery shuts down when the grid goes down, for safety. To keep power on you need a battery set up with backup, and in many setups the solar can keep charging the battery during the day.
Essential-circuit backup covers a few chosen circuits, like the fridge, lights and internet. Whole-home backup covers the whole switchboard, where the battery and board allow. Whole home is more convenient; essential circuits stretch the battery further.
It depends on how much is stored when the power goes out and what you're running. Lights, fridge and internet use far less than air con or an oven. We'll talk through your usage and can set a backup reserve so there's always some charge kept aside.
Sometimes. It depends on the battery, inverter and switchboard. Some systems need a gateway or backup switch added. We'll check what you've got and tell you what's possible.
No. With backup you stay connected to the grid and the battery only takes over when the grid drops out. Off-grid means no grid connection at all, so the system has to be much bigger and usually includes a generator. See our off-grid solar page.
The federal rebate covers the battery itself. Backup wiring, gateways and switchboard work are separate lines on your quote. Our battery rebate guide explains how the rebate is worked out.
Sometimes, but it uses a lot of power and can drain the battery quickly. A small split system is more realistic than ducted. We'll tell you honestly what your battery can handle.
Yes. We work right across South Australia, including the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu, Kangaroo Island and regional areas, with install partners in the South East, Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas. Every job is designed, managed and signed off by NG Elec.
