Solar panel cleaning in Adelaide.

Dirty solar panels make less power, and grime left long enough can overheat cells until they burn out. NG Elec cleans panels across Adelaide and SA and checks the system while we're up there.

The short answer

Get your solar panels cleaned when dirt, dust, bird mess or leaves build up, especially near the coast, farms, dusty roads or trees. It isn't just about output. On a commercial roof in Gawler, built-up dirt overheated the cells until they burnt, and the whole system needed replacing. Regular cleaning and checks would have caught it.

Is this you?

Signs your panels need a clean

A visible film of grime

If you can see dirt from the ground, there's more on the panels than you think.

Bird mess

Droppings bake on and shade whole cells. If birds are nesting underneath, add bird proofing.

Output's down in good weather

Your app shows less than usual on clear days, with no inverter errors.

A dusty or salty spot

Near the coast, unsealed roads, farms, paddocks or busy roads, grime builds up faster.

Low-tilt or flat panels

Rain doesn't run off them as well, so dirt sits and builds up.

What we do

What's included in a clean

We clean the panels and look over the whole system while we're there.

A gentle, proper clean

Soft brushes and water. No abrasive scrubbing or pressure washing.

Visual system check

We look over panels, frames, mounting and cabling, and flag anything that looks wrong.

Thermal check option

Add a thermal drone flyover to find hot spots dirt has already caused. See thermal drone inspections.

Bird proofing at the same visit

If pigeons are the source of the mess, we can fit mesh while we're on the roof.

Homes and commercial roofs

From single-storey homes to big commercial solar arrays, where dirt does the most damage.

How it works

How a clean works

  1. Book in

Call 0425 322 552 or send the form. Tell us roughly how many panels you have and whether it's single or two-storey.

  2. Check before we clean

We look over the array first and note any obvious damage, so you know what was there before we started.

  3. Clean

Panels cleaned with soft brushes and water. No pressure washers.

  4. Report back

We tell you what we found. If anything needs fixing, we quote it separately so you can decide.

Pricing

What affects the price

Cleaning is quoted per job, based on your roof and array. Quotes are free.

  • Number of panels
  • Roof height, pitch and access (two-storey takes more setup)
  • How dirty the panels are
  • Adding bird proofing or a thermal drone check
  • Location and travel

Case study · Gawler, SAThermal drone inspection of a commercial solar roof in Gawler

In October 2026 our thermal drone inspection of a commercial roof in Gawler found built-up dirt had overheated cells across the array, leaving panels burnt and damaged. The whole system needed replacing, damage that regular cleaning and checks would have caught early.

FAQ

Questions people ask us.

How often should I clean my solar panels?

It depends on where you are. Panels near the coast, farms, dusty roads or trees, and low-tilt panels, build up grime faster and usually benefit from a clean every year or two. Others need it less. Our guide on when to schedule solar maintenance goes through it.

Can dirt really damage solar panels?

Yes. Built-up grime makes cells run hot. Left long enough, it burns them and the panel has to be replaced. On a commercial roof in Gawler, built-up dirt overheated the cells until they burnt, and the whole system needed replacing. Regular cleaning and checks would have caught it.

Isn't rain enough to keep panels clean?

Rain helps, but it doesn't shift baked-on grime or bird mess, especially on low-tilt panels.

Can I clean the panels myself?

We don't recommend it. Walking on panels can crack cells, roofs are a fall risk, and damaged panels can still carry live current.

Do you use a pressure washer?

No. We use soft brushes and water. No pressure washing or abrasive scrubbing.

Will you check the system while you're up there?

Yes. We do a visual check every clean and flag anything that needs attention. For a deeper look, add a thermal drone inspection.

Do you clean commercial arrays and systems other companies installed?

Yes to both. Commercial roofs are often where dirt does the most damage, because nobody's looking at them. The Gawler system is a good example.
