The short answer

A switchboard upgrade replaces an old fuse or half-full board with a modern one that has RCD safety switches, circuit breakers and space for new circuits. It's usually needed for homes with ceramic fuses, no safety switches, frequent tripping, or when adding solar, a battery, an EV charger or air con. Many homes are done in a day, with power off for part of it.

Is this you?

Signs you need a switchboard upgrade

Ceramic fuses

Rewirable fuses don't protect people from electric shock. A modern board with safety switches does.

No safety switches (RCDs)

If there's no test button on your board, you probably don't have them. They're one of the most important safety upgrades for older homes.

Frequent tripping

Breakers dropping out when you run a few appliances means the board or circuits are struggling.

Burning smell, scorch marks or buzzing

Turn it off and call us. Heat at the board is a fire risk and shouldn't wait.

Adding solar, a battery, EV or air con

New loads need protected circuits and space. Older boards often can't fit them.

What we do

What's included

Homes and businesses, single or three phase.

Full board replacement

Old fuses and enclosure out, a new board with breakers and RCDs in, everything labelled.

Safety switches

RCD protection added to circuits so a fault cuts power before it hurts someone.

Dedicated circuits

For air con, induction cooktops, EV chargers, sheds and pools.

Solar and battery ready

Space and protection for solar batteries and inverters, now or later.

Three-phase boards

New boards as part of a three-phase upgrade, including SA Power Networks coordination.

Asbestos backing panels

Older boards can have asbestos backing. We identify it at quote and handle it properly.

“the install was organised and implemented in a very efficient, professional and safe manner.”

How it works

How a switchboard upgrade works

  1. Photo or site check

Send a photo of your board or we'll check it on site, along with what you're planning to add.

  2. Free written quote

Itemised, with any asbestos, metering or supply work called out upfront.

  3. Install day

We tell you the power-off window in advance, and the timing is on your quote.

  4. Test and certify

Every circuit's tested, labelled and certified, and we coordinate with SA Power Networks if metering changes.

Pricing

What affects the price

Every switchboard is different, so we quote from a photo or site visit. Quotes are free and itemised.

  • Number of circuits and safety switches
  • Asbestos backing panel or enclosure replacement
  • Condition of existing wiring
  • Single or three phase
  • Metering or supply changes with SA Power Networks
  • Space for future solar, battery or EV circuits

FAQ

Questions people ask us.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Many homes are done in a day, with the power off for part of it. We'll confirm the timing on your quote. Larger or staged commercial jobs take longer and we'll plan them with you.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Adelaide?

It depends on the number of circuits, the enclosure, asbestos, wiring condition and phase. Send us a photo of your board and we'll give you a free, itemised quote.

Do I need a new switchboard for solar, a battery or an EV charger?

Often, yes. Older boards may not have the space, protection or isolation these need. We check before quoting your EV charger or battery so there are no surprises.

What if my board has an asbestos backing?

Some older boards do. It changes how the work's done, not whether it can be done. We flag it at the quote.

Will my power be off?

Yes, for part of the job. We'll tell you the window in advance so you can plan around it, and fridges and freezers are usually fine.

Is a switchboard upgrade worth it if nothing's wrong?

If your board has no safety switches, yes. RCDs are the main protection against electric shock, and an upgrade now also saves rework when you add solar or an EV later.

Do you upgrade switchboards outside Adelaide?

Yes. We cover all of South Australia, including the Hills, the Fleurieu, the South East and regional SA.
