SA Power Networks application handled

Three-phase power upgrades in Adelaide.

You need three-phase power when your home or business wants more capacity than single phase can give, usually for a bigger solar inverter, a fast EV charger, ducted air con or workshop machinery. NG Elec checks whether you really need it, handles the SA Power Networks application and does the switchboard and wiring work.

The short answer

A three-phase upgrade changes your supply from one active conductor to three, giving more usable capacity and smoother running for motors and large inverters. In Adelaide it needs an SA Power Networks application, new mains or metering and usually a new switchboard. Cost depends mostly on your distance to the pole or pit, overhead or underground supply and switchboard work.

Is this you?

Signs you need three-phase power

Your solar quote is capped

SA Power Networks usually limits single phase homes to around 10 kW of inverter. Three phase lets you go bigger. See home solar.

You want faster EV charging

Standard home chargers run fine on single phase. Faster chargers need three phase and a car that supports it.

Everything's going electric at once

Heat pump, induction, ducted air con, EV and a battery together can outgrow a single phase supply.

Lights dim when motors start

Workshops, pool pumps and compressors can drag a single phase supply down.

Equipment is three-phase only

Some machinery and commercial gear simply needs it.

What we do

What a three-phase upgrade includes

We manage it end to end, from the load check to the network paperwork.

Load assessment

We look at what you run now and what you're adding, and tell you honestly if three phase is the answer.

SA Power Networks application

We lodge and manage the network application on your behalf.

Mains and metering

New consumer mains and coordination of the meter change.

Three-phase switchboard

A new board with safety switches, balanced across all three phases. See switchboard upgrades.

Load balancing and testing

Circuits spread across phases so nothing's overloaded, then tested and certified.

How it works

How it works

  1. Load check and site visit

We look at your supply, switchboard and what you're planning to add.

  2. Free quote and network application

You get an itemised quote. Once you go ahead, we apply to SA Power Networks.

  3. Install

On-site work is usually the quick part. Network and meter steps take longer, and we'll give you a timeline with your quote.

  4. Test and connect

Everything's tested and certified, and the meter's changed over to finish the job.

Pricing

What affects the price

There's no standard price for a three-phase upgrade. It mostly comes down to your site, and every quote is free and itemised.

  • Distance from the pole or pit to your switchboard
  • Overhead or underground supply
  • Whether three phase is available in your street
  • Switchboard replacement and circuit rework
  • Metering and network charges
  • Trenching, boring or wall chasing

FAQ

Questions people ask us.

How do I know if I already have three phase?

Look at your main switch. A three-pole main switch, or three meters or a three-phase meter, usually means you have it. If you're not sure, send us a photo of your board and meter.

How much does a three-phase upgrade cost?

It depends on distance to the pole or pit, overhead or underground supply, switchboard work and network charges. We'll give you a free, itemised quote after a site check.

Do I need three phase for an EV charger?

Usually not. A single phase home charger suits most drivers. Faster charging needs three phase and a car that supports it. See EV charger installation.

Will three phase lower my power bill?

No. It changes your capacity, not the price per kWh. Where it helps is letting you install bigger solar and run more of your home on it.

Can I get three phase anywhere in Adelaide?

Only where the network can supply it. Most metro streets can, but some rural and older areas need extra network work. SA Power Networks confirms it during the application.

How long does it take?

On-site work is usually the quick part. The network application and meter change take longer, so start early if it's tied to a solar or battery install.

Are there alternatives?

Sometimes. A switchboard upgrade, load control or single phase equipment can be enough. We'll tell you if you don't need three phase.
