The short answer

An off-grid solar system powers a property with no grid connection using solar panels, battery storage, an off-grid inverter and usually a backup generator. NG Elec sizes each one from a load analysis of everything you run, designs for short, cloudy winter days, and has built off-grid systems at Mount Jagged, on Kangaroo Island, in Hindmarsh Valley and at Kangarilla.

Is this you?

When off-grid makes sense

The grid doesn't reach you

You're building on a block where the poles and wires are a long way off, or the connection cost is steep.

Sheds, pumps and outbuildings

A shed, workshop or pump that's too far from the house or meter to run power to.

Short-stay and tourism

Like the two Airbnbs we powered at Mount Jagged with a 22.8 kW array, 52 kWh battery and auto-start generator.

A remote block you'll build on later

On Kangaroo Island we powered a new shed first, with the system set up to grow when the home goes in.

What we do

A complete system, not a kit

Every part is designed, installed, commissioned and signed off by NG Elec.

Load analysis

Every appliance, pump and tool on site, including seasonal loads, so the system matches how you actually live and work.

Roof or ground-mounted solar

Sized for winter output. At Mount Jagged we ground mounted 48 x 475W Jinko panels on driven piles, with underground cabling.

Batteries and off-grid inverters

Battery storage and off-grid inverters matched to the site, including Selectronic and Sigenergy gear. We're a Selectronic accredited integrator.

Generator backup

Generator input designed in, so it starts and charges the batteries when the sun can't keep up. Mount Jagged runs an 8 kVA auto-start unit.

Load management and monitoring

Catch Power and smart controls to run big loads while the sun's up, plus monitoring you can check from your phone where the gear supports it.

Regional and island installs

We travel anywhere in SA from Hackham, with trusted install partners in the South East, Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula, and recent jobs on Kangaroo Island.

How it works

How an off-grid build runs

  1. Site and load list

Call 0425 322 552 or send the form. We go through everything you'll run and when, and look at the site, shading and where the gear can go.

  2. Design for the worst week

Panels, battery and generator sized for short, cloudy winter days. Around Adelaide, panels make about 2.4 kWh per kW a day in winter against 5.8 in summer, so winter sets the design.

  3. Install

Licensed electricians install everything, from ground mounts and trenching to the battery hut. Kangaroo Island took one day; the bigger Mount Jagged build took five.

  4. Commission and handover

We test and commission the whole system and show you how to run it, generator included.

Pricing

What affects the price

Off-grid is designed and quoted job by job, so we don't publish off-grid prices. Every quote is free and itemised, so you can see exactly where the money goes. For a feel of grid-connected solar and battery prices, see our price guide.

  • How much power you use and when, especially through winter
  • Battery capacity and inverter size
  • Roof or ground mount, and how far cables need to be trenched
  • Generator size and whether it's auto-start
  • Site access and travel for remote and island jobs
  • Room built in to expand later

Case study · Mount Jagged, SAOff-grid solar in Mount Jagged: powering two Airbnbs

We built a complete off-grid system that runs two Airbnb properties at Mount Jagged with no mains power at all. It pairs 22.8 kW of ground-mounted solar with 52 kWh of battery storage and an 8 kVA auto-start generator, and it went in over five days.

FAQ

Questions people ask us.

How much battery storage do I need off-grid?

It depends on what you run overnight and through cloudy stretches. We do a load analysis of everything on site, then size the battery for your daily and seasonal loads, with a generator for the worst weeks. For scale, the two Airbnbs at Mount Jagged run on a 52 kWh battery.

Do I need a backup generator?

For most off-grid homes, yes. A generator keeps you running through long runs of poor weather. We design the generator input into the system so it can start and charge the batteries when needed.

Should I go off-grid if I already have the grid?

Usually not. If you're connected, staying on the grid with a solar battery is often better value. Off-grid makes sense where the grid doesn't reach or connecting costs too much. We'll give you an honest comparison.

Can I expand my off-grid system later?

Yes. We design systems so you can add panels or batteries as your needs grow, like the Kangaroo Island shed system that's set up for a future home.

Can you do off-grid sheds and outbuildings?

Yes. We do off-grid power for sheds, workshops, pumps and rural outbuildings, as well as full homes and short-stay accommodation.

Do you do off-grid outside Adelaide?

Yes, anywhere in South Australia, including Kangaroo Island, the Fleurieu, the Adelaide Hills, Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas, the Flinders Ranges and the South East. Read more in our guide to off-grid solar in SA.

How long does an off-grid install take?

It depends on the size of the system and the site. Our Kangaroo Island job was installed in one day. Mount Jagged, with a 22.8 kW ground mount on driven piles and underground cabling, took five days.

Who looks after it once it's in?

We do. Where the system has monitoring, we can check the data with your OK, and we handle servicing and repairs. Every install carries our lifetime workmanship warranty.
