The short answer

A home EV charger is a dedicated wall unit on its own protected circuit. On single phase it typically charges at up to about 7 kW, adding roughly 40 to 50 km of range per hour for most cars. NG Elec checks your switchboard and supply first, then sets the charger up with your solar and battery so the car soaks up power you'd otherwise export, not the power your house needs tonight.

Complete the ecosystem

Solar, battery and car. One system.

Most homes send spare solar back to the grid for a few cents. Your car's battery is bigger than your home battery, so it's the best place to soak that energy up. The trick is getting all three working together, not three gadgets doing their own thing.

01 · SolarMakes the power

Your panels cover the house first. Whatever's left over is surplus.

02 · BatteryHolds it for tonight

Stores surplus so you're not buying power through the evening peak.

03 · EV chargerDrives on it

Takes what's genuinely spare and turns it into kilometres.

Surplus solar charging

The charge rate follows the sun.

A solar-aware charger reads what your home is exporting, second by second. When a cloud rolls over or the kettle goes on, it dials the charge rate down. When the sun comes back out, it dials it back up. The car gets the spare solar and the house never goes short.

A basic charger just pulls full power the second you plug in, sun or no sun. That's grid power at whatever rate you're paying.

Most good chargers give you three modes, and we'll set the one that suits how you use the car.

Solar only Cheapest

Charges only on spare solar. Pauses when there isn't enough to run the charger at its minimum rate.

Solar assist

Holds a small base rate and tops it up with whatever solar is spare. Keeps things steady on patchy days.

Fast

Full speed from every source. For when you need the car full tonight and cost doesn't matter.

What can go wrong

The wrong setup empties your battery into your car.

We see it all the time. A "solar" charger goes in with its sensor in the wrong spot, or it can't tell solar from battery power. The car plugs in, the battery sees a big load and starts discharging to cover it. By late arvo your home battery's flat, and you're buying peak power all evening.

Set up wrong

  1. 11amCar plugs in. Charger pulls full power, no matter how much solar is spare.
  2. 1pmThe battery covers the gap and starts draining instead of filling.
  3. 4pmHome battery's empty before the sun's even gone down.
  4. 6pmDinner, telly, air con. All on peak-rate grid power.

Set up right

  1. 11amCar plugs in. Charger only takes what the house and battery don't need.
  2. 1pmBattery keeps filling. The charge rate rises and falls with the sun.
  3. 4pmBattery's full and the car's picked up its kilometres for the day.
  4. 6pmThe house runs off the battery through peak. Little or no grid power.

Same panels, same battery, same car. The difference is where the sensors go, which charger you pick and how it's programmed. Got a charger someone else put in that's doing this? We can fix it.

Set up around your plan

Charge when power's cheapest. Or free.

There's no one right setting. It comes down to when the car's actually home and what plan you're on. We program the charger and the battery together so they're not fighting over the same cheap window.

Car's home during the day

Run it on surplus solar. Battery fills first, the car gets the rest. Suits working from home, retirees and second cars.

Car's only home at night

Schedule it into your plan's overnight EV rate, and lock the home battery so it doesn't discharge into the car. The battery's job is the house.

On a free-power plan

Some SA plans now include free power in the middle of the day. We set the car and battery to charge hard in that window. Read about Solar Sharer free power.

Not sure what your plan's windows are? Send us a recent bill and we'll work out the best schedule for your setup.

Chargers we install

The right charger for the system you've got.

The best charger is usually the one that talks to your inverter and battery. We'll match it to what's on your wall now, or what you're putting in.

Pricing

What affects the price

A 7 kW single phase charger, installed, is typically about $2,200 to $2,800 incl GST on NG Elec jobs in 2026. The cable run is the big variable. Every quote is free and itemised. See our price guide. The main things that change it:

  • The charger you choose and its speed
  • Distance from the switchboard to the charger
  • Whether your switchboard needs work
  • Single or three phase supply
  • Solar integration or load management
  • Wall type and cable route

FAQ

Questions people ask us.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger?

On typical NG Elec jobs in 2026, a 7 kW single phase charger installed is about $2,200 to $2,800 incl GST. Where yours lands mostly comes down to the cable run from the switchboard, and whether the board needs work. Every quote is free and itemised. See our price guide.

How fast can I charge at home?

A typical single phase charger runs at up to about 7 kW, roughly 40 to 50 km of range per hour for most cars. Three phase homes can go faster if the car supports it.

Can I charge my EV from solar?

Yes, and it's usually the cheapest way to charge. A solar-aware charger follows your solar, so the car uses power you'd otherwise export for a few cents.

Why does my home battery go flat when I charge my car?

Usually the charger can't tell spare solar from battery power, or its sensor is in the wrong spot. The battery sees the car as a load and drains into it. Moving the sensors and setting the charger and battery up together fixes it. We can sort out chargers someone else installed.

Which EV chargers work with my solar and battery?

We install Sigenergy, GoodWe, Tesla Wall Connector and Ocular. Ideally the charger matches your inverter or battery brand so they talk to each other. Ocular works with any solar brand through its own sensors.

Can I charge my car for free?

On spare solar, yes. Some SA plans also include free power in the middle of the day, and we can set your car and battery to charge in that window.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade?

Sometimes. Older boards may not have the space or protection. We check before quoting and tell you upfront. See switchboard upgrades.

Do I need three-phase power?

Usually not. Single phase suits most drivers. Three phase only matters if you want faster charging and your car supports it.

Can I just use a normal power point?

You can trickle charge, but it's slow and the point isn't designed for hours of heavy load every day. A dedicated charger is faster and safer.

Which charger should I get?

It depends on your car, your supply and whether you have solar. Tell us what you drive and we'll recommend options that suit.

Do you install chargers for businesses?

Yes. Workplaces, fleets and strata car parks, with load management so the site stays under its supply limit.
