The short answer

The SA battery rebate is the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program. It's paid through STCs, so NG Elec claims it and takes it off your quote. For installs up to 31 December 2026 it's about $258 per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh, then less on bigger batteries. A 16 kWh battery gets about $3,910 off and a 24 kWh battery about $5,170. The rate steps down on 1 January 2027.

How it works

Tiered by battery size.

Since 1 May 2026 the rebate is worked out in bands of usable capacity. The first 14 kWh gets the full rate, and each band after that gets less.

First 14 kWh6.8 STCs

per usable kWh. About $258 per kWh at $38 an STC. This is where most of the rebate sits.

14 to 28 kWh4.08 STCs

per usable kWh, 60% of the full rate. About $155 per kWh.

28 to 50 kWh1.02 STCs

per usable kWh, 15% of the full rate. About $39 per kWh. Nothing above 50 kWh.

Rates shown are for batteries installed from 1 May to 31 December 2026. The dollar value moves with the STC price on the day, so treat these as close estimates. Program details are on the Cheaper Home Batteries Program page.

Eligibility

Am I eligible?

  • The battery is on the approved list. Every GoodWe, Sigenergy and Tesla battery we install is.
  • It's installed with new or existing solar.
  • It's installed by a Solar Accreditation Australia accredited installer. That's us.
  • It's capable of joining a virtual power plant. You don't have to join one.
  • The property hasn't already had a discounted battery under the program.
  • Homes, small businesses and community groups all qualify. It isn't means tested.

What the rebate doesn't cover

Switchboard upgrades, blackout backup wiring, extra panels and swapping out a non-hybrid inverter all sit outside the discount. We check your switchboard and inverter at the free site inspection and price all of it up front, so there are no surprises on install day.

Pay it off, not up front

We offer $0 deposit and flexible payment options on battery installs, so the rebate and your repayments can line up from day one.

Already got solar? Most systems can take a battery. Here's how adding a battery to existing solar works.

FAQ

Questions people ask us.

How much is the battery rebate in SA right now?

For batteries installed by 31 December 2026, the full rate is 6.8 STCs per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh, which works out to about $258 per kWh at $38 per STC. Capacity from 14 to 28 kWh gets 60% of that rate, and 28 to 50 kWh gets 15%.

When does the rebate drop?

The next step down is 1 January 2027, when the full rate falls from 6.8 to 5.7 STCs per kWh. On a 24 kWh battery that's about $840 less off. It's the install date that counts, not the quote date.

Do I have to apply for it myself?

No. As the accredited installer we claim the STCs on your behalf and take the value straight off your quote as its own line.

Is there a separate SA state battery rebate?

Not at the moment. South Australia's old Home Battery Scheme is closed, so the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program is the one that applies.

Do I need solar to get it?

Yes. The battery has to be installed with new or existing solar. If you don't have solar yet, we can quote both together and you get the solar incentive and the battery rebate on the same job.

Can I add more batteries later and still get the rebate?

Extra capacity can qualify if it hasn't had the discount before, it's at least 5 kWh, and the total system stays at or under 100 kWh. It's simpler and usually better value to size it right the first time.

Is it means tested?

No. Homes, small businesses and community organisations can all get it.
